사랑에 관한 단상 – A Whiter Shade Of Pale

프로컬 핼럼(Procol Harum)이라는
1967년에 조직이 된 영국 출신의 락 밴드가
데뷔를 하면서, 같은 해에 빅 히트를 시킨 싱글곡이
바로 이 ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale‘입니다.
오리지널 버전은 6분이 넘는 긴 곡
(방송용으로 4분 편집 버전도 있음)입니다만,
바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach)의 클래식 음악에서
메인 테마(Main Theme)를 인용하고,
또 1년 전에 미국에서 갓 나온 펄시 슬레이지(Percy Sledge)의
‘남자가 여자를 사랑할 때(When a Man Loves a Woman)‘의
도입부 테마도 일부 차용하면서,
마치 요즈음의 퓨전 요리 같이 작곡을 한 음악이라고 하는데,
반세기가 지나도 참으로 듣기 좋은 명곡입니다.



We skipped the light fandango
And turned cartwheels cross the floor.
I was feeling kind of seasick
But the crowd called out for more.
The room was humming harder
And the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
She said "There is no reason,
And the truth is plain to see,"
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be,
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast,
And although my eyes were open
They might just have well been closed.
And so it was that later,
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
She said she wanted shore leave
Tho in truth we were at sea
So I took her by a looking glass
And forced her to agree,
Saying you must be the mermaid
Who took Neptune for a ride
Well she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died
And so it was, etc...





음악의 전주부분서부터 등장을 하여
시종일관 지속이 되는 인상적인
하몬드 올갠(Hammond Organ)연주의 테마는
바흐(Johann Sebastian Bach)의 칸타타(Cantata)음악,
“Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe, BWV 156”에서
인용을 하였답니다.

흑인들의 전유물 같았던 소울 음악을
푸른 눈의 백인들이 한다고 해서 “Blue Eyed Soul"
이란 용어도 생겨났었지만,
미국의 박스 탑스(The Box Tops) 그룹도 그런 부류죠,
이들의 “The Letter", "Cry Like A Baby"도 유명하지만,
프로컬 핼럼보다 좀 더 밝은 분위가가 나는 박스탑스의
버전의 이곡도 의외로 괜찮습니다.



이곡을 만든 멤버중의 한 명인 작곡, 작사가
키스 레이드(Keith Reid. 1946)가
파티 석상에서 어떤 사람이 한 여자에게
“You've turned a whiter shade of pale.”
이라고 하던 말에서 제목을 따왔다고 합니다.
그런데, 재미있는 것은 이곡이 유행을 한 후에
이곡의 제목은 남녀 관계에서의 어느 순간을 은유하는
관용구로 영미에서는 유행을 시작하였다고 하네요.
이곡의 가사에도 있지만,
술에 취하여 창백해지는 경우 외에
또 창백해지는 때가 과연 언제일까요?
